Jomolhari Trek: An Epic Himalayan Adventure
Embark on an unforgettable journey through the pristine natural beauty of Bhutan, a land shrouded in myth and mystery. The Jomolhari Trek offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the remote and rugged landscapes of the Himalayas, where majestic snow-capped peaks, ancient forests, and crystalline lakes form an awe-inspiring backdrop.
Day 1: Arrival in Paro
Altitude: 2300m
Upon your arrival at the airport, a local representative will extend a warm welcome and accompany you during your Bhutanese sojourn. Begin your cultural exploration with a visit to Rimpong Dzong, a marvel of Bhutanese architecture. This dzong, or fortress-monastery, was originally constructed in 1645, destroyed by fire in 1907, and promptly rebuilt. Explore its inner sanctums and capture the beauty of the central tower, Utse, often hailed as the country's most exquisite. You can even take photographs within the dzong's courtyard.
Following your dzong visit, take a leisurely hike to the old wooden bridge, once a guarded entrance to the dzong in ancient times. Then, amble through the town, savor local cuisine at restaurants, and immerse yourself in the Bhutanese ambiance. Spend the night at your hotel.
Day 2: Trek to Takshang
Altitude: 3150m, Trek: 4 hrs
Prepare for a warm-up hike to one of Bhutan's most sacred pilgrimage sites, Takshang or Tiger's Nest, which has provided refuge for over 1200 years. This legendary temple clings to a steep cliff 200 meters above Paro valley, with its history dating back to the 8th century when Guru Rimpoche, founder of tantric Buddhism in the Himalayas, meditated here after arriving on a tigress' back.
The original temple, constructed in the 17th century, succumbed to fire in 1998 but was resurrected in all its glory by 2003. It ranks as the 10th holiest site in Buddhism. The trek to the temple takes around four hours, with one hour from the parking area to the tea house and another one and a half hours to reach the temple.
In the evening, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songchen Gyampo. Conclude your day with a Bhutanese Jacuzzi or hot stone bath at a local farmhouse and return to your hotel to prepare for the trek ahead.
Day 3: Paro – Shana – Soi – Thangthangkha
Distance: 22Km, Duration: 6-8hrs, Altitude: 4044m
Leaving behind the historic fortress of Drugyel Dzong, a pivotal landmark in Bhutan's history, embark on a journey along a winding road through the region's stunning natural beauty. Along the way, pass charming villages with traditional architecture and vibrant community life.
As you depart the villages, vast agricultural fields unfold, where diligent farmers cultivate crops vital to the local population. This presents a unique opportunity to observe traditional farming practices and learn about indigenous crops.
After about an hour of driving, reach Gunitsawa, a significant army checkpoint marking the gateway to Bhutan's pristine mountain wilderness. Here, your true trekking adventure begins as you step out of the vehicle and immerse yourself in the majestic landscape.
It's a long day of trekking with ups and downs, taking you through the isolated Shing Karap farm at around 3100 meters. Further along, you'll encounter a crossroads marked by stacked rocks adorned with colorful prayer flags. Opt for the right trail marked "way to Soi," leading to a steep climb and descent to a bridge, offering passage over the river and leading you to Thongo Samba, an ideal lunch spot.
Traverse the breathtaking forest, which may yield encounters with yaks. Approach these creatures cautiously, as they can be wary of strangers. The trail eventually leads to a small white stupa and a bridge. Avoid crossing the bridge, which leads to Yaktsa village. Half an hour beyond the bridge lies your campsite for the night at Soi Thangthangkha, where you can rest amid the serene Himalayan beauty.
Day 4: Soi – Thangthangkha to Jangothang
Distance: 17 Km, Duration: 4-6 hrs, Altitude: 4010m
Wake early to witness the sun's first rays illuminate Chomolhari, the second-highest peak at 7314 meters, nestled between steep valleys. A one-hour walk along the left side of the Pa chhu (Paro River) takes you beyond the treeline into a breathtaking valley. This valley unfolds to reveal stunning views of snow-capped peaks as you pass a military camp guarding the Tibet border and encounter yaks and their winter camps.
Continue the trek, passing the small village of Soia Yutey, where you can enjoy butter tea and lunch. The campsite is just a few minutes' walk from the village, providing an ideal overnight spot.
Day 5: Jangothang – Halt
Altitude: 4010m
Today is a day of rest and acclimatization. You have options for activities, including a walk to Tshophu with two lakes and panoramic views of Jomolhari and Jichu Drakey peaks. Alternatively, hike westward toward Jomolhari and its subsidiary peaks or head north to Jichu Drakey. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the eastern region by scaling summits and ridges, but exercise caution as the trail lacks proper markings. Whichever option you choose, immerse yourself in breathtaking natural beauty and acclimatize to the high altitude.
Day 6: Jangothang – Lingshi
Distance: 18Km, Duration: 6-7hrs, Altitude: 4010m
The trek to Chomolhari, Jichu Drakey, and Tserim Gang promises breathtaking views of these towering peaks, making it a must-visit for adventure enthusiasts. Depart from the last house in Jangothang, crossing a small bridge and ascending a steep hill to a stunning opening. Along the way, spot Himalayan vultures and herds of marmots.
The climb leads you through a beautiful valley, taking roughly three hours to reach the Nyle la pass at an altitude of 4880m. From the pass, descend steeply to a stream, then take the left side of the mountain. This trail is relatively flat until reaching a ridge with a view of Lingshi Dzong dominating the landscape and offering vistas of Jichu Drakey and Tserim Gang.
Descend through the forest to the campsite at Chha Chi Thang, where you can rest amid the Himalayan beauty.
Day 7: Lingshi – Shodu
Distance: 22Km, Duration: 6-8hrs, Altitude: 4080m
The trail leading to the opposite side of Lhingshi village takes you through a wide, beautiful valley. The trek lasts about four hours, followed by a steep climb to the Yelela pass at a staggering 4950m, the highest point of the trek. Enjoy breathtaking views of the landscape and glacial lakes along the way.
From Yelela pass, descend gradually to the campsite at Shodu, situated at 4110m. The descent offers opportunities for rest, rejuvenation, and panoramic views of the surroundings. Spend the night at the Shodu campsite, soaking in the mountain's tranquility.
Day 8: Shodu – Barshong
Distance: 16Km, Duration: 5-6hrs, Altitude: 3710m
Today's picturesque trek follows the Thimphu Chhu river through a limestone valley. The trail features steep ascents and descents, offering both a physical workout and stunning natural beauty. Along the way, you'll encounter caves used by monks for meditation, believed to have been frequented by the revered Shabdrung in the 17th century.
Highlights of this leg include giant rock faces and cascading waterfalls, awe-inspiring in their size and beauty. The ascent leads to Barshong Dzong, an ancient fortress now in ruins, bearing testament to Bhutan's rich history and culture.
This part of the trek blends physical exertion with spiritual enrichment, offering a unique and unforgettable journey.
Day 9: Barshong – Domshisa – Dodena – Thimphu
Distance: 15Km, Duration: 5-6hrs, Altitude: 2300m
Continue your trek, tracing the Wangchu River through dense hemlock and rhododendron forests, passing through Dolam Kencho. Emerge from the forest and ascend to a mountain meadow at 3428 meters. Cross a small pass and arrive at the Dodena road point, north of Thimphu. From there, embark on a 30-minute drive to Bhutan's capital, Thimphu.
Upon arrival, check into your hotel, unwind, and explore the city. Thimphu, Bhutan's modern capital, boasts a population of around 98,500. Though small, it is vibrant and bustling, with a rich cultural heritage and numerous attractions for visitors.
